Answer by Sabrina Horn, Author, Speaker, Advisor and CEO of Horn Strategy, on Quora:

Fake it till you make has infused our culture and been baked into our society. It’s like air. People today think that if they don’t fake it, they wont make it, which has put integrity in the back seat. The phrase basically tells you that it’s ok to lie and take those short cuts in order to succeed. It has created this sense that somehow integrity is optional. As leaders we are tasked with setting an example. If we fall into the fake it trap, we are creating a culture of fakers. You can’t build a sustainable business that way. Customers and investors and shareholders and employees will figure it out, and your reputation and your brand will fall apart. The truth is, that the truth always comes out, and when it is does, you’ll be exposed, ruin your reputation, set yourself back and sabotage your success.
